BMV > Driver's Licenses And Permits > Learner's Permits Learner's Permits

The Bureau of Motor Vehicles issues two different types of permits to Indiana residents who are learning to drive: a learner's permit and a driver education learner's permit

A learner's permit allows an Indiana resident who is at least 16 years old to practice driving without taking a driver education course.

A driver education learner's permit allows an Indiana resident who is at least 15 years old to enroll in a driver education program and practice driving before applying for a driver's license.

You may not drive in Indiana with an out-of-state learner’s permit. If you have an Indiana learner’s permit and plan to travel outside of Indiana, you should first check the other states’ laws to determine if you may drive in each particular state.

Getting A Permit Without A Birth Certificate Or Social Security Number

Indiana residents who do not have a birth certificate or a Social Security number may get a learner's permit by submitting alternate documents of identification.
