BMV > Driver's Licenses And Permits > Renewing A License Renewing A License

Indiana residents may renew a driver's license at any Indiana license branch up to one year before the driver's license expires.

  • If you are between 18 and 74 years of age, your license must be renewed every six years and will cost $21.
  • If you are between 75 and 84 years of age, your license must be renewed every three years and will cost $11.
  • If you are 85 years of age or older, your license must be renewed every two years and will cost $7.

If you are 16 or 17 years old when you get your license, your license is considered probationary and must be renewed on or before your 21st birthday. You may amend your license after you turn 18 years old to remove the probationary driver's license designation.

Your driver's license expires at midnight on your birthday. If your birthday falls on a day on which license branches are closed, the driver's license will expire at midnight on the next business day. A late fee of $5 will be charged if the license is renewed after that date. You may make an online appointment to renew your driver's license at many license branches.

Requirements to renew your driver's license

To renew your driver's license you will need to pass a standard vision screening test.

  • If you are renewing a license that has been expired for less than six months you must pay a $5 late fee and pass a standard vision screening test.
  • If you are renewing a license that has been expired for six months to three years you must pay a $5 late fee, and pass a written examination and a standard vision screening test.
  • If you are renewing a license that has been expired for more than three years you must pay a $5 late fee, and pass a written examination, a driving skills test, and a standard vision screening test.
  • If you are younger than 21 years of age and have any points on your driving record, or if you are older than 21 years of age and have six or more points on your driving record, you must take the written examination to renew your driver's license.

You do not need to provide any documents of identification when renewing your driver's license unless you have moved since your last license renewal, or your name has changed from what is shown on your birth certificate. If you have moved since your last license renewal, you will need to provide a computer-generated document such as a utility bill or pay-check stub that contains your name and new address. If your name has changed from what is shown on your birth certificate, you will need to provide a court-issued order verifying the change to your name.
