If you have moved from Indiana to another state you may apply to receive a refund of any remaining Indiana vehicle excise tax. To receive the refund, you should mail or fax the following documents to the Bureau of Motor Vehicles:

  • A photocopy of your vehicle's permanent registration from your new state. If the vehicle has been sold or traded, include a Bill of Sale or a Dealership Worksheet. If you have moved to North Carolina or Georgia, you must include both sides of your new state’s vehicle registration.
  • A photocopy of the Indiana Certificate of Registration, or your most recent Indiana plate number, or your Social Security number.
  • Your return address.
  • If your name has changed, you must include the certified court decree issuing the change of name.

    Ineligible vehicles

    Recreational vehicles and watercraft are not eligible for refunds of remaining Indiana excise tax. Trucks that are 16,000 pounds or heavier, and trailers that are 5,000 pounds or heavier, are not eligible for a refund because these vehicles are charged a Commercial Vehicle Excise tax, which is distributed to the Indiana Department of Revenue.
