Illegal license plate frame

Indiana law requires that all text, numbers, and stickers on your license plate be fully visible and cannot be obscured by plate frames or covers.

License Plate Stickers

Correct plate sticker placement

Your Indiana license plate should have three stickers:

  • A sticker showing the next year in which your registration must be renewed.
  • A sticker showing the month and day on which your registration must be renewed.
  • A sticker showing the county in which your vehicle is registered.

You should replace the year sticker in the top right corner of your plate every year to indicate that you have renewed your vehicle's registration.

The month and day sticker should be located in the top left corner of your plate. Unless the date of your registration renewal changes, you will not need to replace this sticker.

The location of the county sticker will depend on the type of plate that you have. If the word INDIANA is at the bottom center of your plate, your county sticker will show your county's number and name, and should be in the top center of your plate. If the word INDIANA is at the top center of your plate, your county sticker will show only your county's number and should be in the bottom right corner of your plate. Unless your county of residence changes, you will not need to replace this sticker.
