National research has shown teen drivers to be higher risk for becoming involved in traffic crashes that result in severe injury and death. To take steps to protect teens behind the wheel, Indiana has placed specific restrictions on probationary drivers under the age of 18.
On July 1, 2009, Indiana implemented new Graduated Drivers Licensing (GDL) requirements for these probationary drivers. Beginning July 1, 2010, a new set of regulations will take effect.

One of the most important things parents can do to protect their new drivers is familiarize themselves with Indiana's new GDL laws. To educate both teens and their parents about these new laws, ICJI has published some educational resources. Parents should talk with their teens about GDL restriction and educate them about safe driving practices early on and teens should understand the rules before they get behind the wheel.
Always wear your seat belt.
Not only is it your first line of defense against death or injury in a motor vehicle crash, it's the law. No matter what type of license you have, every passenger in your vehicle wear a seat belt at all times - even if that vehicle is a truck or SUV.
