Be a part of INShape Indiana’s SummerFit Program

Two years ago Governor Daniels first introduced his statewide health and fitness initiative, INShape Indiana, which encourages Hoosiers to eat better, move more, and refrain from smoking.  At its core, INShape Indiana is a web-based clearinghouse that connects people to resources for nutrition, physical activity, and tobacco cessation.  In the first year alone, there were more than 6.1 million hits to the INShape Indiana website.

INShape Indiana has grown to encompass many additional activities and increased educational outreach.  Earlier this year, Governor Daniels and INShape Indiana launched a 10-week, 10-pound weight loss challenge called “10 in 10.”

Participants were instructed on how to reduce their daily calorie intake by 250 calories and increase their daily physical activity to burn an additional 250 calories (3,500 calorie deficit per week, which equals the loss of one pound).  The challenge attracted more than 40,000 participants from all 92 counties.  Of those who reported their results, the average weight loss was over 7 pounds, with 32 percent having lost 10 or more pounds.
 
Building on the success of 10 in 10, this week INShape Indiana begins a new summer health and fitness program called “SummerFit.”   Over the next eight weeks, from June 11 to August 3, participants will receive weekly e-mails containing tips for staying fit during the summer months.  Participants can track their progress through a point system; for each healthy activity completed they will earn points toward a weekly goal. 

SummerFit will focus on the following categories:

  • 30 minutes of physical activity – 7 points
  • 8 ounces of water – 1 point
  • 1 fruit or vegetable serving – 2 points
  • 1 day without using tobacco (all participants eligible) – 2 points

Participants can also earn points by sharing the benefits of INShape Indiana with a friend (2 points) and by completing a special weekly bonus (10 points).  The goal is to reach or exceed 100 points each week through any combination of these healthy behaviors.  For example:  If a participant exercises for 30 minutes for 2 days (14 pts), drinks 3 glasses of water a day (21 pts), eats 4 servings of fruit and vegetables a day (56 pts), abstains from tobacco daily (14 pts), forwards a SummerFit e-mail to a friend (2 pts), and completes the “weekly bonus” (10 pts), they would earn 117 points

At the conclusion of SummerFit, participants who submit point totals will be eligible for an INShape Indiana-related prize.  There is no cost for the program.  Those interested may sign up to participate on the INShape Indiana website at http://www.inshape.in.gov/.
