DLGF launches petition and remonstrance toolkit for taxpayers

INDIANAPOLIS (January 11, 2008) – Today, the Department of Local Government Finance (DLGF) launched an online toolkit for citizens who want to object to new construction projects. The Citizen’s Petition and Remonstrance Toolkit is available online to assist Hoosiers in understanding the complicated objection process required by law.

“Hoosier citizens have the right to object to local spending,” Commissioner Cheryl Musgrave said. “This toolkit will help taxpayers navigate the complicated process and ensure their voices are heard.”

The Citizen’s Petition and Remonstrance Toolkit will provide answers to frequently asked questions (FAQ’s), a flow chart of the process, sample forms (including instructions for initiating the petition and remonstrance), and links to the statutes and voter registration offices in local communities.

The toolkit will be available on the DLGF Web site at

The Citizen’s Petition and Remonstrance Toolkit is the latest in efforts by the DLGF to make property tax information more readily available and transparent to Hoosier taxpayers. This fall, the DLGF launched its first searchable databases, which provide sales disclosure and assessment information on properties statewide. Last month, the DLGF added an additional database, which allows the public to search property tax billing information. The tools can assist taxpayers in the assessment appeal process and enable Hoosiers to search for other properties in the area defined as a neighborhood by their assessor. The DLGF also prepared county summaries to provide taxpayers with information about property taxes and budgets of governmental units in their area, and recently made meeting summaries, audio and video available of the tax control board meetings.

Hoosiers can access all the tools through the DLGF Web site at
