What's Going On In Forestry
NOTICE: Hiking and horse trails at Deam Lake State Recreation Area and Clark State Forest that were in the path of the March 2, 2012 tornados that devastated much of the state from Pekin to Henryville are closed at this time. Further updates will be posted as they become available.
After extensive clearing of hazard trees at Deam Lake State Recreation Area in Borden, Indiana, the Indiana Department of Natural Resources, Division of Forestry is offering firewood cutting permits. All available logs are pine and oak, and the cost of each rick of wood is $3.00. Permit holders will be allowed to cut only trees that are on the ground, as cutting standing trees is prohibited. Permits span a two-day period with a maximum quantity of five ricks per permit. Additional permits after the two-day window are available, but there is an annual maximum of 10 ricks per family. Permit holders must bring their own saw, and a four wheel drive vehicle is recommended. All logs are easily accessible from a hard-surface road. This program is intended for homeowners’ private use and is not intended for resale. Permits and cutting are only allowed during regular operating hours, 8am-3:30pm Monday thru Friday. Available dates for cutting are December 11-18, 2013 and January 6-17, 2014, weather permitting. For more details, please contact the main office at Deam Lake at (812) 246-5421.
