Dear Educator
One of the most exciting things about spring is planting things and watching them grow! There is a special feeling that comes from planting a tiny tree seedling and seeing it grow into a strong, tall tree. It is a feeling everyone should experience.
Trees touch our lives in more ways than most of us can even imagine. From the air we breathe and water we drink to the paper you use in school and the furniture in our homes, we depend upon both living and harvested trees for so many things.
The last Friday of April each year is designated as Arbor Day in Indiana. It is a day to appreciate the importance of trees. J. Sterling Morton, the man who first proposed a tree planting holiday to be called "Arbor Day" back in 1871, summed up the essence of Arbor Day:
"Other holidays repose upon the past; Arbor Day proposes for the future."
We hope these Arbor Day celebration ideas and activities will make your Arbor Day an event that will be remembered for years to come!
