Understand why stormwater pollution is a threat to Indiana's waterways
Non-point source pollution is when you can not point to a single, traceable source coming from the pipe but rather many diffuse sources. Everybody contributes to non-point source pollution!” Anything dumped into a storm drain is not treated before it empties into a nearby waterway. That means that when it rains oil, antifreeze, grass clippings, pet wastes, or any other wastes left on streets and sidewalks flows directly into our waterways. That's why it's important to mark storm drains in your community because people need to be reminded that only stormwater should flow down the drain.

Educate residents and business about why storm drain marking is important
Many people don't realize that storm drains flow directly to the nearest body of water and is the leading source of water problems in our state. That's why state and local governments are working with communities to educate citizens about storm water pollution. Community involvement and education is important to the success of keeping Indiana 's waterways clean. Water is a critical resource for plants, animals and human. All living things cannot survive without it. There is a lot we can do as individuals to reduce the pollution entering our waterways.Storm Drain
