Who?
Any Indiana citizen interested in water quality. Volunteers range in age from elementary school students to senior citizens (adults are trained to teach students).
What?
Monitoring the health of a stream or river's habitat, biology, and chemistry.
When?
Training sessions are held primarily from May - October; however, monitoring is performed year-round.
Where?
Any Indiana river or stream site selected by the volunteer.
Why?
For education, local involvement, water quality protection or improvement, and fun!
How?
The methods are easy to learn and can be performed by volunteers of all ages. Click here for additional information on monitoring procedures.
How do I get started?
First attend a training workshop to learn about water quality monitoring and to gain hands-on water testing skills. Next you will need water monitoring equipment. If you belong to a school, nonprofit organization, or governmental agency, you may apply for a Riverwatch equipment package. If you don't, you may be able to borrow equipment from a Riverwatch Loaner Site or share with another group. You may also purchase your own equipment or make it at home (See Appendix A of the Riverwatch Training Manual).
