April 7, 2008

My sister-in-law lives in an Indiana college town and works on campus in a foreign-student dorm. Every year around this time she hears students discussing taxes. They have lots of questions. The main one centers around how to file his – or her – taxes in Indiana.

Here’s the short answer:

  • Full-year Indiana resident college students will file either the IT-40 (long form) or the IT-40EZ (short form).
  • Indiana nonresidents, including part-year residents, will have to file the IT-40PNR for nonresidents. This includes foreign students (anyone, really, who files the federal 1040NR or 1040NR-EZ).

We suspected college students might be discussing taxes around the watering hole, so we’ve put together a Web page for them. Here, those college students eager to do their civic duty can find answers to commonly asked questions. Definitions, such as for a filing status, also are included.

But, by far, the best help out there for a college student is our fast, friendly and free online filing program, I-File. College students who have previously filed a tax return with Indiana will automatically qualify to use I-File. By answering just a few questions, the program will choose the right tax form for the student, and walk him – or her – through the whole process of online filing in about 15 to 30 minutes.

The student just has to make sure to have a completed federal tax return and W-2s handy before he – or she – begins. Plus, if a young scholar chooses to have his – or her – refund electronically deposited, it’s very likely any refund due will be deposited within one to two weeks of electronically filing the return.

By taking advantage of I-File, students – and anyone, for that matter – can file their state taxes in no time. That will free-up some valuable time for that all-important party … uh, I mean social anthropology group-study time.

Welcome to Tax Talk, hosted by DiB (dye-bee), the Indiana Department of Revenue’s individual income tax guru. DiB, who says she’s been with the Department “since the earth cooled” (though it’s actually 30+ years), writes and develops Indiana’s individual income-tax instruction booklets and forms. DiB created Tax Talk to address Indiana individual income tax questions and issues during the filing season. If you would like to submit a question or topic suggestions, please send those to DiB at feedback@dor.in.gov
