March 3, 2008

At the bleakest point in the battle near the end of J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Hobbit, someone joyously shouts “The eagles are coming, the eagles are coming,” and indeed, their coming turns the tide of the battle, helping the good guys win.

Indiana has a special opportunity for taxpayers to help eagles and other non-game and endangered wildlife win in the battle of conservation – and give taxpayers a reward in the form of a federal tax write off, for those that itemize their deductions.

To help, you just have to make a donation to Indiana’s Nongame Wildlife Fund on your state tax return.

The money you donate goes directly to the protection and management of more than 750 wildlife species in Indiana – from songbirds and salamanders to state-endangered Trumpeter swans and spotted turtles. Through efforts financed by this fund, Indiana has seen the reintroduction of peregrine falcons to Hoosier skies, and an increase in our bald eagle population.

If you file your own taxes, look to make a donation to the fund when you get to the refund area of I-File, or the paper form. If using a paid preparer, let him or her know about your intentions up front. A contribution made to the Nongame Wildlife Fund is fully deductible if you itemize your deductions on your federal tax return. If you make a donation, you will be eligible to claim this year’s contribution as a deduction on next year’s federal itemized deduction schedule.

If you are not receiving a refund, but would like to make a donation anyway, you can make a donation directly to the Nongame Wildlife Fund. Go to in.gov/dnr/fishwild/5420.htm for instructions, and learn how donations have helped Indiana’s endangered wildlife.

When taxpayers like you invest in a good cause like the Nongame Wildlife Fund, Indiana has the reinforcements it needs to help win the battle for the bald eagles … and the ospreys … and the river otters … and the bobcats … and – you get the idea.

Welcome to Tax Talk, hosted by DiB (dye-bee), the Indiana Department of Revenue’s individual income tax guru. DiB, who says she’s been with the Department “since the earth cooled” (though it’s actually 30+ years), writes and develops Indiana’s individual income-tax instruction booklets and forms. DiB created Tax Talk to address Indiana individual income tax questions and issues during the filing season. If you would like to submit a question or topic suggestions, please send those to DiB at feedback@dor.in.gov
