Have you seen them? You know, the commercials that run every tax season, touting new and improved tools for filing your taxes quickly and easily. Have you seen the one running this year where the man confidently brags, “I’ve got people” -- to help him with any tax situation that might come up?
Well, the Department of Revenue has provided a new solution this year to help those individuals who want to have “people” in their corner when tax questions arise.
We’ve added a “personal representative” area to the income tax return. This allows you to authorize the Department to contact a person of your choosing to help iron out any questions we might have about your 2007 income tax filing.
You can authorize your tax preparer to be your personal representative. Or Uncle Joe. Or your best friend. Just make sure it’s someone with whom you fully trust sharing your tax information. And be sure to let your personal representative know you’ve listed him or her, in case we need to make contact. Remember, the “personal representative” option is just that – an option to exercise if you choose.
It’s just an easy way to have your “people” talk to our people.
Welcome to Tax Talk, hosted by DiB (dye-bee), the Indiana Department of Revenue’s individual income tax guru. DiB, who says she’s been with the Department “since the earth cooled” (though it’s actually 30+ years), writes and develops Indiana’s individual income-tax instruction booklets and forms. DiB created Tax Talk to address Indiana individual income tax questions and issues during the filing season. If you would like to submit a question or topic suggestions, please send those to DiB at feedback@dor.in.gov
