February 4, 2008

Indiana has offered I-File, the fast, friendly and free online state income tax filing service since 1999. That year 6,339 returns were filed using this program; in 2007, more than 96,000 people used it. One reason for this whopping increase has been a huge revamp that was made to the tool in 2006, which transformed I-File from a fill-in-the-blank PDF online form to a jazzy new interactive tool that does most of the thinking for you.

But the hits haven’t stopped there. Every year we’ve rolled out new improvements, and this year is no different.

Improved navigation was the number one requested upgrade last year. Now, going back and forward within the program has never been easier. Plus, whole sections that don’t apply to you can now be skipped with a click of your mouse. And using I-File is free.

Further improvements to I-File in 2008 include additional security checkpoints and the ability to confirm payment status. Previous I-File users returning to the program also have the benefit of viewing last year’s tax return online. Oh, and did I tell you … it’s free!

Indiana’s I-File is the state’s equivalent to using the IRS’s Free-File program. Well … sort of. While the IRS links you to outside vendors for free federal filing, they do have income, and, sometimes, age restrictions. Plus, they usually charge a fee for preparing your state tax return. Did I explain that I-File is free?

The only restriction to Indiana’s I-File is that you must have filed a state return within the last few years … income and age limits do not apply. Plus, we don’t bring in outside vendors – it is the state’s program, and the filing is free.

We encourage you to use I-File this year. Filing your return electronically reduces math errors, costs less to process and gets your refund to you in a matter of days. How can you say no that that kind of service? Oh, and I did mention … its’ free.

Welcome to Tax Talk, hosted by DiB (dye-bee), the Indiana Department of Revenue’s individual income tax guru. DiB, who says she’s been with the Department “since the earth cooled” (though it’s actually 30+ years), writes and develops Indiana’s individual income-tax instruction booklets and forms. DiB created Tax Talk to address Indiana individual income tax questions and issues during the filing season.
