DOR > About Us > Resources > Tax Talk Blog > When it is time to pay! When it is time to pay!

June 25, 2007

Joetta and Jay, our intrepid business-tax duo, continue the business-tax series with a report on how to make business tax payments.

Previously, on the summer business-tax series,

  • the May 14 installment showed you how to register your business with the Department,
  • the May 29 installment covered the dos and don’ts of sales tax, and
  • the June 11 installment discussed state and county withholding tax requirements.

Now you’re registered to do business in Indiana, you’ve done research and you know which forms to file, and you’ve marked the calendar with the deadlines so that you will get everything in to the Department of Revenue in a timely manner. So what’s the next item on the to-do list? Well, it’s probably everyone’s least favorite – it’s time to pay the taxes due.

There are many ways to send in your tax payments. We are working all the time to make this process more convenient for you. Some still prefer the “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” method, such as sending in a check with the paper return.  We gladly accept payment that way, so if it’s working for you, we say hang with it. If it works for you it works for us. But Internet surfers are all over the convenience and speed of the ePay system, available 24/7.

Here’s a list of ways to pay your business taxes:

IN ePAY System

  • Convenient, user-friendly, available 24/7
  • Allows both individuals and businesses to pay tax owed to the Department
  • Corporate or individual tax bill payments, remittances due with returns, and estimated tax  payments
  • View estimated tax payment history
  • Begin Using IN-ePay

 INTax System

  • Manage your business accounts 24/7, file and pay, go to INtax
  • Register for EFT (Electronic Funds Transfer), an electronic method for instructing financial institutions to debit or credit customer accounts and transfer of funds from one account to another. Find out more about EFT at
  • Order coupon vouchers to pay your Indiana sales and withholding taxes Order Coupons

Send Payment by Mail
You may pay by check or money order made payable to the Indiana Department of Revenue. Just be sure to include your federal identification number or Indiana taxpayer identification number on your check or money order, and include your voucher, return, or bill.

Make Payment in Person
We also have a number of offices located across the state if you want to make your payment in person. We do enjoy meeting our taxpayers throughout the year, so don’t be shy. Feel free to stop into any one of our 12 district offices around the state. We have a list those offices on our Web site, along with their telephone numbers, addresses and hours of operation.

You may pay by cash, check or money order. Just bring along your voucher, return, or bill with you – oh, and some photo ID, as well.

Expect the checks you write to clear faster than ever!
Due to the Check Clearing for the 21st Century Act the checks you write clear almost at once, increasing the risk that a check will bounce if funds are not in the account when you write it. Please, for your sake, do not bounce a check! The penalty for a bounced check for funds payable to the Department can be 100 percent of the value of the check, so don't write a check unless you are sure the funds are already in the account to cover it.

The important thing about paying when the time comes, first and foremost, is to keep on track with paying your taxes on time and in full. Business owners who have fallen delinquent in paying their taxes have told us again and again that getting behind was one of the most challenging issues they’ve faced as a business owner. And sales and withholding taxes are considered as trust taxes, meaning the business actually collects that money on behalf of customers and employees and it is to be put into a trust to pay to the state when due.

Okay, now that we’re finished with the well-intentioned advice, we hope you’ll come back and visit us again in a couple of weeks when we discuss tools available to you at the Indiana Tax Center. And remember, if you need a little guidance along the way with your business taxes, give us a call at 317.233.4015.  Until then, we wish you the very best in running a successful Indiana business!

Welcome to Tax Talk, hosted by DiB (dye-bee), the Indiana Department of Revenue’s individual income tax guru. DiB, who says she’s been with the Department “since the earth cooled” (though it’s actually 30+ years), writes and develops Indiana’s individual income-tax instruction booklets and forms. DiB created Tax Talk to address Indiana individual income tax questions and issues during the filing season. If you would like to submit a question or topic suggestions, please send those to DiB at feedback@dor.in.gov
