Effective Dec. 17, 2008, Indiana Administrative Code changed regarding CDL rules; here’s how it may affect you:

  • You may only receive three CDL learner’s permits in a two-year period. A CDL learner’s permit is valid for 180 days.
  • Once you have successfully passed your CDL written test and/or skills test, the results are valid for only 180 days.  
  • If you previously possessed a CDL and voluntarily surrendered or relinquished it and would like to obtain your privileges back, you will be required to:
  • Successfully complete all applicable written tests at any BMV license branch.
  • Submit a valid Department of Transportation physical (if one is not already on file)
  • Obtain a CDL learner’s permit.
  • Successfully complete a CDL Skills Test in the type of vehicle you plan to drive.
  • Obtain a CDL from any BMV license branch.
