Have you received a tax bill from the Indiana Department of Revenue in the past few months? Are you confused about it? Here’s a quick recap to help you understand and pay your tax bill on time.
Step 1: Review your bill
What kind of bill did you get? Was it an AR-80 or an AR-40?
An AR-80 Proposed Assessment is the first type of bill in the collection process. It’s not a final bill, but a “notice of proposed assessment.” It tells you the tax type, tax period, due date and amount due. It also contains an explanation of the issue. You can either protest the bill if it’s wrong or pay it by the due date. If you don’t do either within 60 days, you will receive an AR-40.
An AR-40 is a Demand Notice for Payment. This is a final bill and you only have 10 days to pay before it will turn into a tax warrant.
Step 2: Consider payment options
If you are able to pay your tax bill in full, you can do so using ePay. It’s convenient and easy to use, and it allows both individuals and businesses to pay tax owed to the department. You can access ePay 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, and make a tax payment by Visa, MasterCard, Discover or e-check.
If you owe more than $100 and cannot pay the amount in full, you might be eligible to set up a payment plan online using INtax Pay.

Step 3: Visit a district office for more information
If you’d like to discuss your tax bill with someone face-to-face, visit one of our district offices. We have locations in Bloomington, Clarksville, Columbus, Evansville, Ft. Wayne, Kokomo, Indianapolis, Lafayette, Merrillville, Muncie, South Bend and Terre Haute.
Representatives at these district offices will sit down with you and address your concerns about your tax bill, discuss payment plans and help get you started with INtax Pay if you are eligible.
You can also pay your tax bill while you’re there. We accept exact cash, checks, money orders, cashier’s checks, Visa, MasterCard and Discover.
