About The Department

The Indiana Department of Revenue was created by an Act of the Indiana General Assembly on February 18, 1947. The Department is headed by the Commissioner of Revenue who is appointed by the Governor. The Department of Revenue is responsible for providing service to Indiana citizens regarding state tax matters. Additionally, the Department administers state tax laws, develops regulations, and makes decisions about tax policy.

In order to serve the public and properly administer the tax laws, the Department of Revenue employs approximately 750 full-time and part-time employees.

The Department of Revenue is headquartered at the Indiana Government Center located in downtown Indianapolis. The Department also maintains operation of the Returns Processing Center and the Motor Carrier Services Division at the Ameriplex complex on Indy's Westside. Additionally, we provide service through 12 District Offices located throughout Indiana, and representatives in four other states. The Department conducts operations through nine internal divisions, each responsible for a specific business function:
