Anti-Scald Devices
Date:
September 20, 2002
In March 2001 communication was sent to all providers reinforcing the need for the individual’s support team to address the issue of safety in utilizing hot water. Since that time we have had ten incidents of scalding reported. In some of these instances individuals were seriously injured. Given the availability of anti-scald devices – there is little reason that anyone should ever be burned.
It is essential that the individual and their support team consider the need for any anti-scalding devices to be installed. An anti-scald devise is required when the individual needs such protection or when one of the individual’s housemates requires an anti-scald device. The support team’s decision must be documented and the need (or lack of need) for an anti-scald device must be included as a part of the individual’s support plan.
The cost of anti-scald devices can be covered by either waiver or state line item dollars. Associated costs for any anti-scald device, installation or other needed safety devices can be included in either the Plan of Care or the Individualized Support Plan. For individuals with housemates, the cost should be divided among the individuals who require the protection of the anti-scald device. In cases where the protection is not needed by all housemates, only the individual/individuals that require it should have the cost included in their Plan of Care or Support Plan.
Even with anti-scald devices in place, malfunctions can occur. Providers and case managers should periodically review with staff preventive measures for assuring that a scalding does not occur, including regularly testing the water temperature and spot checking the temperature before bathing etc.
Please assure that all your staff are aware of the need to address any protections an individual may need and the availability of resources to obtain anti-scalding devices. Please feel free to direct any questions to my attention at (317) 234-1147 or via e-mail at mnewman@fssa.state.in.us.
