FSSA has taken various actions to improve the number of healthy babies born to Medicaid mothers in Indiana, making it the single most important priority for its Hoosier Healthwise program. The Office of Medicaid Policy and Planning (OMPP) created a Quality Improvement Committee composed of OMPP and community stakeholders. Based on the Committee's efforts to identify barriers to healthy child and pregnancy outcomes and purpose solutions, Medicaid has moved forward with a plan to reduce smoking among pregnant women and has recently developed a single risk-assessment form to be used by providers to identify risk factors for potentially complicated pregnancies as early as possible. These stakeholders are working together to ensure women recieve early prenatal care which research has demonstrated can reduce the risk of premature birth, low birth weight and extended stays in Neonatal Intensive Care Units (NICU).
