The historical markers are made of aluminum including the cap at the bottom of sign. Some of the markers may only need the frame, cap, or post painted. Others may need to be completely repainted. The following instructions and paint information may be used for the restoration of the marker.Preparation:
- Sand or wire brush to remove all loose or chipping paint.
- Whisk broom the dust and dirt off of marker.
- Wash with mild detergent, rinse, and thoroughly dry. A clean dry surface is essential before painting.
Paint Information:
- Background - Dark Blue - RUST-OLEUM Spray Paint Gloss Protective Enamel – Navy #7723
- Text and Outline of State - Gold - Use any non-tarnish exterior-interior liquid gold (This type of paint may be found in art supply, hobby, or home improvement stores)
- Frame, cap, or post on marker - Silver - Use any paint that is an industrial/maintenance paint for aluminum, which should be available in hardware or home improvement stores.
Note: Ace Hardware has a product called Chrome Aluminum #253A110 Aluminum.
Painting the Marker:
- Background - Spray paint the marker with the navy and let dry for 24 hours.
- Text and Outline of State - Sponge brush the gold paint over the letters and state outline.
- Frame, Cap, or Post - Sponge brush the aluminum paint.
Note: There should be instructions on each type of paint, which need to be followed. Some of the painting may require two coats depending on the condition of the marker.
