Indiana Bicentennial Celebration 2016

Amber Alert
Amber Alert - TEST

Legacy Projects > From the Seat of a Tractor From the Seat of a Tractor

The Pike County Tractor Club revisits the history of the county each September when the members, plus visiting drivers, travel through parts of the nine townships in the county. The club is composed of members from each of the nine townships who help plan the route for their particular township. This project started in 2008 and the club has successfully completed six drives and just completed their seventh. The local Lion’s Club sponsors the event, local Young Farmers organization prepares a noon meal, local musicians entertain during the meal and a video is made of the drive complete with a brief history of the area toured. In 2016, the focus of the drive will be on the route of the Indiana Bicentennial Torch Relay. As chosen bearers of the torch for Pike County, the group will be honored to celebrate the 200th year of statehood for Indiana along with the 200th birthday of Pike County. A video will be made with the historical focus on the particular route the torch will travel. The local high school’s Digital Design and Visual Communications Department, with their instructor and a former student will produce the video.

What do you consider the key accomplishment of your Legacy Project?

  • Participating in the Bicentennial Torch Relay on Sept. 13, 2016 as 6 members of the
Pike County Tractor Club, representing the total club. This club consists of members
living in each of the 9 townships in Pike County. Our 6 members carried the Torch from
the Knox/Pike line. All of the Pike County Tractor Club members were accepted by the

  • It was a pleasure for the 6 members of the Pike County Tractor Club to receive the
Indiana Bicentennial Torch from a descendant of Gov Blue Jean Williams, Jim D.
    Williams of Knox County.

How/where are you preserving information and artifacts related to your Legacy Project?

  • A DVD was made of the Torchrelay coming through Pike County and will be presented
to each local county school and library. This DVD was filmed, edited and produced by Middy Burns, local instructor at Pike County High School. It was completed in Nov of 2016.
