Legacy Projects > Indiana Limestone Heritage Trail (Limestone Month) Indiana Limestone Heritage Trail (Limestone Month)

The Indiana Limestone belt in Monroe and Lawrence counties has been an important component of the economy in the area for over 150 years and is an integral part of the region’s history, culture and scenic beauty. Family owned quarries and the art of limestone carving have been passed down from generation to generation. A proud history of building some of the county’s most recognizable and distinguished buildings is from the 35-mile long limestone belt.

This legacy project will be a month long celebration of limestone in Monroe and Lawrence counties in southern Indiana. Many of the activities will include walking tours, lectures, exhibits and hands-on activities all to teach the geology, history and beauty of Indiana limestone.
