Amber Alert
Amber Alert - TEST

Legacy Projects > Bicentennial State Park Hikes Bicentennial State Park Hikes

This program will offer hikes in each state park to celebrate the Bicentennial of Indiana’s statehood. Hikes will be led by an experienced hike leader. We will offer several levels of hikes to appeal to people with all levels of hiking ability, from beginners to experienced hikers. Souvenir merchandise will be offered for sale to participants taking part in the hikes. Also, commemorative passbooks similar to those used with the national parks will be available, with pages stamped after each hike.

Q&A with Legacy Project Coordinator Edwin S. Wright

What do you consider a key accomplishment of your Legacy Project?

  • To celebrate the bicentennial the Indianapolis Hiking Club completed hikes in all 25 of Indiana's State Parks during 2016. Including make-up hikes our Club hiked 104 times in Indian's State Parks. More than 2500 members and guests attended the hikes. All told, we hiked almost 14,000 miles in the parks. Thirty-five of our members hiked in all 25 parks.

Describe a highlight or most memorable moment related to your Legacy Project.

  • Since there were so many hikes one moment doesn't stand out above others. However, the very first hike in White River SP on January 1, 2016 drew 147 people, the largest attendance we have every had on a single hike. That was quite noteworthy.

How/where are you preserving information and artifacts related to your Legacy Project?

  • At our Club Christmas party we awarded a commemorative pin to 258 members who hiked in at least one state parks. Members who hiked in 20 parks received a Bicentennial Tee Shirt and those who hiked in all 25 state parks received a photo book of the hike series. All of this information is now published on our Club website www.indyhike.org

Total number of volunteers who participated.

  • 53 different leaders led the SP hikes.

Estimated total attendance.

  • About 2,500 people attended the hikes.
