Legacy Projects > Original Play Celebrating Susan B. Anthony's Visit to Madison, Indiana Original Play Celebrating Susan B. Anthony's Visit to Madison, Indiana

Madison Community Players is creating an original one-act play commemorating Susan B. Anthony’s visit to Madison, using newspaper accounts, local businesses directories, and her own writings. On October 10, 1879, Susan B. Anthony gave her famous speech, Bread Not the Ballot, at the Oddfellows’ Hall in Madison, IN. It was widely reported in the local newspaper at the time, but most people today are unaware of her visit. When they hear about it, most are surprised, but also impressed that Madison would have entertained such a famous person. This play will show that local history includes national characters, making American history more personal and reminding people to not take the right to vote for granted.
