Indianapolis-The Indiana Civil Rights Commission (ICRC) and the Butler University Creative Media and Entertainment program partnered for the third consecutive year on a project to develop anti-discrimination public service announcements (PSA’s). The announcements, created by students under the guidance of ICRC staff and Butler University faculty this spring, discourage discrimination in the Hoosier state.
“We love partnering with Butler University and having the opportunity to work with their students and faculty,” said Jamal L. Smith, Executive Director of the Indiana Civil Rights Commission. “This partnership serves a dual purpose. It provides the ICRC with professional quality public service announcements, and students with real-world experience.”
Students were divided into groups representing the Indiana Civil Rights Commission (ICRC), the Indiana Commission for Women (ICW), the Indiana Commission for Hispanic/Latino Affairs (ICHLA) and the Indiana Commission on the Social Status of Black Males (ICSSBM). They were asked to do research on their assigned commission and to develop messaging consistent with their mission and objectives.
Now completed, the announcements will be placed on radio stations throughout the state. Many of the announcements created by Butler University students in the previous two years have aired since the project.
“Students from last year’s class were calling me and posting on Facebook that they had heard their announcement on the radio,” said Cutler Armstrong, faculty member at Butler University. “Knowing that these announcements will be used by the Indiana Civil Rights Commission makes this project much more exciting for students and staff.”
The Indiana Civil Rights Commission enforces the Indiana civil rights laws and provides education and services to the public in an effort to ensure equal opportunity for all Hoosiers and visitors to the State of Indiana.
