IDEM periodically issues technical information and announcements on a variety of topics relevant to risk-based closure. This page presents a chronological list of such resources, with newer information and announcements appearing first.
Current
- Sampling Soil and Waste for Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) [PDF]
- Describes appropriate techniques for collecting and preserving soil and solid waste samples intended for VOC analysis, with particular emphasis on United States Environmental Protection Agency (US EPA) Method SW-846 5035A. (August 15, 2012)
- Tetrachloroethene Screening Level Announcement [PDF]
- Provides optional IDEM screening levels for tetrachloroethene, based on the May 2012 update of the US EPA Regional Screening Levels table. (July 31, 2012)
- Engineering Controls Technical Guidance:
- Three technical guidance documents that provide basic design, operation, and maintenance guidelines for several engineering controls sometimes used in controlling exposure risk. (March 28, 2012)
- Investigation of Manmade Preferential Pathways for Contaminant Transport [PDF]
- A technical guidance document that defines manmade preferential pathways, explains their importance in contaminant transport, and describes methods for investigating them. (September 30, 2011)
- Proper Investigative Techniques in Karst [DOC]
- A technical guidance document that provides an overview of karst and lists and describes elements of environmental investigations in karst terrain. (June 30, 2011)
- Remedy Selection and Implementation State Forms:
- Two state forms that summarize remedy selection and implementation. IDEM requires that the appropriate form accompany any Corrective Action Plan or Remediation Work Plan, or any request to approve site closure. (January 1, 2011)
- Record of Remedy Selection (State Form 54471) and Record of Site Closure (State Form 54472) are available on the IDEM Forms page
- Ground Water Sampling Technical Guidance Documents:
- Two technical guidance documents that describe ground water sampling techniques designed to reduce sample turbidity and associated problems. (November 3, 2009)
- Determining the Fraction of Organic Carbon [PDF]
- Provides sampling, analysis, and documentation guidance useful in determining the site-specific fraction of organic carbon in soils. Fraction of organic carbon values are important when deriving site-specific migration to ground water remediation objectives. (September 2007)
- Sampling and Analysis of Ground Water for Metals at Remediation Sites (Waste-0057):
- A nonrule policy document that provides information on using unfiltered ground water sampling for metals at remediation sites. It also outlines ground water sampling methods for water supply wells, monitoring wells, and boreholes. (March 17, 2005)
