Indiana American Water for Southern Indiana supplies water to 30,000 households in the Jeffersonville, Clarksville, and New Albany area. With the Ohio River so prominent, many folks do not realize that their drinking water comes from 19 wells located in the sand and gravels deposited along the Ohio River Valley. These wells draw water that has infiltrated from the river and the upland areas. In order to protect this water, a 10 year time of travel capture zone was identified (exceeding the State’s minimum requirements of a 5 year time of travel zone) and utilized for their potential contaminant source inventory. A top notch local planning team with representatives from business, local government, emergency response and educational institutions was organized and has met four times in the past three years.
Educational programs sponsored by this team have included Earth Day events, presentations at elementary schools, posting of road signs at the entrance of the WHPA, and several newsletter articles including a very well written “Letter to the Editor”. IAW – Southern Indiana has submitted their Phase II update for their Wellhead Protection Plan and are well on their way to full implementation. Congratulations on a job well done.
