Nitrogen dioxide (NO2) is part of a group of highly reactive gases known as oxides of nitrogen (NOx) and is harmful to human health and the environment. U.S. EPA’s National Ambient Air Quality Standard uses NO2 as the indicator for the larger group of nitrogen oxides. NO2 is a highly toxic, reddish brown gas that forms quickly from fuel combustion in industrial sources and vehicles. It creates an odorous haze that causes eye and sinus irritation, blocks natural sunlight, and reduces visibility. In addition, it contributes to the formation of ground-level ozone and fine particle pollution.

IDEM operates seven continuous NOx monitoring sites that are polled hourly every day in order to obtain the most current information. Continuous data is available interactively on the map and the table below. The new Indpls - I-70 E monitoring site is in the process of being installed and NOx readings will be available upon completion.
