The Indiana American Water system in Mooresville serves approximately 3600 customers located in Mooresville and parts of Brown and Madison Townships of Morgan County. They operate five wells that draw from a sand and gravel aquifer known locally as the White Lick Creek Aquifer. Mooresville is only the second “medium-sized” community to receive the Hoosier Water Guardian award and to receive the award before filing their Phase II report to IDEM. The Mooresville local planning team has met regularly since 2001, leading the way for wellhead protection. Under their leadership several Tox Away Days have been successfully implemented since the Fall of 2008. They take responsibility for monitoring potential sources of contamination including a newly constructed pipeline, along with timely response to spills, collaborating with storm water programs, sealing of abandoned wells, and several educational programs. Last year’s educational programs included one for a junior high school science class and the 4-H County fair. Information on wellhead protection is also posted on the Moorseville and Solid Waste Management District websites. Mooresville is working diligently on their Phase II update to their wellhead protection plan which is due in February 2010.
