The Indiana Comprehensive Local Environmental Action Network (CLEAN) is a free voluntary Community Challenge recognition program that recognizes and rewards Indiana cities, towns, and counties for proactively managing environmental impacts associated with governmental operations. CLEAN Community Challenge members develop and implement four environmental priorities to focus on during a four-year designation period. CLEAN Community Challenge is a program that can potentially help communities cut operating costs, while improving the quality of life for residents. For participants, making small changes in the way that local governments impact the environment can reap valuable rewards, including decreased costs, increased efficiencies, statewide recognition for your community, improved relationships with regulators, and certain financial and regulatory incentives from IDEM and state agency partners.
The Challenge is open to all Indiana municipalities including cities, towns, and county levels of government and must include local partners representing citizens and business.
Challenge applicants identify environmental impacts of the municipality’s operations, ultimately selecting four environmental priorities to complete during a four-year designation period. Environmental priorities must fall into at least one Environmental Media Category.
