Charlton School
General Information
The Charlton School and its faculty and staff are responsible for the provision of all formal education programs and services. Currently, the School offers Literacy and GED programs as mandatory participation for those residents not in possession of either and 6, Class B, vocational programs. The following are the 6 vocational programs and a brief description of each:
Building Trades: In this open entry, open exit program, 20 students at a time are challenged to learn and use the skills necessary to earn entry level employment in any of the construction trades. The program emphasizes students using the skills they are learning and have learned on various projects around the facility. The length of this program is 500 classroom hours at minimum or about 18-20 weeks long.
Business Services: This closed entry, closed exit program is an introduction to the business world. 18 students at a time will learn the basics of business and, as a result, learn to navigate to entry level jobs in the business world. The length of this program is 500 classroom hours at minimum or about 18-20 weeks long.
Culinary Arts: This open entry, open exit program provides 20 students at a time with the knowledge and skills necessary for entry level positions in the food industry. Students will learn food safety and preparation skills and use them to prepare and serve various types of meals. The length of this program is 500 classroom hours at minimum or about 18-20 weeks long.
Electronics: This closed entry, closed exit program will introduce 13 students at a time to the world of applied electronics. The length of this program is 500 classroom hours at minimum or about 18-20 weeks long.
Landscape Management: This closed entry, closed exit program for up to 30 students in a part time enrollment will introduce them to the world of landscape management. Students will cycle through all aspects of landscape management and put that knowledge to use in facility related projects. The length of this program is minimally, 500 hours spread out through 24-28 weeks.
Outdoors Power Equipment (Small Engine Repair): This open entry, open exit program is designed for 13 students at a time to learn how to repair and maintain outdoors power equipment. Certification through the Equipment and Engine Training Council, a national organization, is available upon successful program completion. The length of this program is 500 classroom hours at minimum or about 18-20 weeks long.
Residents considering potential vocational program enrollment must hold a valid and verifiable high school or GED diploma and have PREF Admission and Orientation TABE scores of 8.0 or better in all areas of the test.
Every effort is employed to ensure eligible residents are enrolled in our vocational programs. However, because of limited program enrollment capacities, all residents should expect placement on the vocational program waiting list of their choice in accordance with, minimally, DOC policy and procedures.
Upon successful vocational program completion, students will receive a Certificate of Program Completion and, if eligible, an appropriate time cut.
