IDOI > Consumers > About Consumers How the Department Serves Consumers

We understand the concerns and questions consumers have about all the different types of insurance they need to understand.  The Department maintains information and also has multiple resources available to help provide answers to questions, give guidance, and help with claim issues as necessary.

The IDOI has an entire division dedicated to addressing complaints from consumers whether those complaints are with an insurance company, an HMO, or an insurance agent.  In 2006, the Department was able to obtain $10,555,432 in reparations (monies paid to consumers) for claims that had either been denied or incorrectly adjusted.

If you are considering purchasing insurance, we have a link to the INSURE U series of educational materials for help in understanding and selecting auto insurance, home or renters insurance, life insurance, long-term care insurance,  health insurance, etc. developed by the National Association of Insurance Commissioners.

If you have any other questions, you may call 1-800-622-4661 for assistance, or you may click on our ‘Contact Us’ link to find the appropriate area to contact for help.
