Microsurface construction, on State Road 56 in the Seymour District, is one technique used for preserving pavement at INDOT.

As INDOT crews work hard to keep our pavement clear of ice and snow this winter, others at INDOT are working to keep the pavement of our highways lasting for many years, perhaps even past a typical life cycle. A mile of highway can cost more than $12 million to build – a huge investment. And just as you protect an asset like a vehicle or home, INDOT protects its investments with pavement preservation.
This strategy optimizes INDOT's construction dollars, keeping Indiana's pavement in better condition. Just $1 spent on pavement preservation can save more than $10 on future repairs. INDOT's pavement preservation program will include many miles of chip seals and other surface treatments for the 2009 construction season.
At this time, 5-10% of our major preservation budget is dedicated to pavement preservation. One goal of the new pavement preventive maintenance initiative will be to formalize preventive maintenance activities and determine the optimum balance between preventive maintenance expenditures and capital expenditures.
Remember, when you see work crews on a highway that doesn’t appear to need much attention, it’s probably INDOT’s pavement preservation program at work! 1 Dollar spent is 10 dollars earned!
