INDOT constructed a new U.S. 31 interchange at State Road 28 in Tipton County. Project plans called for INDOT to bridge State Road 28 over U.S. 31 and construct single-lane roundabouts to regulate ramp traffic. The roundabouts were designed to accommodate agricultural equipment, large trucks and future expansion. The finished project also includes direct access to the Tipton Transmission Plant and a looping ramp for traffic entering southbound U.S. 31.
S.R. 28 was closed for approximately 120 days during interchange construction. The new interchange opened to traffic in November 2016.
INDOT’s design for the new U.S. 31 and State Road 28 interchange:
- Supports local economic vision and is endorsed by local governments
- Accommodates current and forecasted traffic volumes
- Provides the most efficient traffic flow
- Offers a high level of safety with the installation of roundabouts and overhead lighting
- Minimizes impacts to Tucker Cemetery
