About the Project
The $189 million Major Moves New Construction Interchange Modification is the last element of the complete rebuilding of the Borman Expressway between the Indiana/Illinois state line and I-65. The project consists of three contracts over a five-year period that began in spring 2007.
- The first contract includes the construction of new ramps from northbound I-65 to westbound I-80/94 and eastbound I-80/94 to southbound I-65, and rehabilitation of three bridges within that area of roadway.
- The second contract, which began construction in 2008, includes upgrading I-65 over I-80/94 and upgrading the other ramps between the Borman Expressway and I-65.
- The third contract, which began construction in 2009, includes adding a travel lane and connector lane to eastbound and westbound I-80/94, as well as replacing the pavement between Broadway (S.R. 53) and Central Avenue.

When finished in 2011, the new highway is expected to handle traffic volumes for 20 years and will feature:
* More lanes - for a total of four through lanes in each direction.
* New collector-distributor lanes to help motorists easily enter and exit the highway.
* Lengthened interchange ramps and new bridges to maximize vehicle flow.
* Enhanced lighting and improved drainage.
2007: Rebuild I-65 and three bridges south of the interchange. Reconstruct the connector ramp from I-65 northbound to Borman Expressway westbound. Reconstruct the connector ramp from Borman Expressway eastbound to I-65 southbound.
2008: Rebuild I-65 over the Borman Expressway. Replace the bridge on Colorado Avenue over the Borman Expressway. Rebuild remaining ramps between I-65 and the Borman Expressway.
2009: Replace the existing Borman Expressway pavement and add a fourth lane between Broadway (S.R. 53) and Central Avenue. All reconstruction activities are scheduled to be complete by summer 2011.
