I-80/94 (Borman Expressway) construction project
now in second phase.

Construction focusing on middle of the road

The Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) is widening I-80/94 (the Frank Borman Expressway) from six to 10 lanes between State Road 53 (Broadway) and Central Avenue in Northwest Indiana.

The project began in March 2009 and is scheduled for completion in summer 2011. Construction focused on the eastbound lanes in early 2009, is currently addressing the middle of the road and will focus on the westbound lanes in 2010. In 2011, the Borman is scheduled to be open in its final configuration of four through lanes in each direction plus continuous ramp lanes.

March – November 2009 – Construction focused on the eastbound Borman lanes.

Fall 2009 – Summer 2010 – Construction is focusing on the middle of I-80/94. The expressway will remain three lanes of through traffic in each direction with the speed limit reduced to 45 MPH.

The Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) is rebuilding the interchange of the Borman Expressway (I-80/94) and I-65 through three projects. The Major Moves Interchange Modification projects have a total cost of $189 million.

The first contract, awarded in 2007 to Walsh Construction Company of Chicago for $46 million, includes the construction of new ramps from northbound Interstate 65 to westbound I-80/94 and eastbound I-80/94 to southbound I-65, as well as the rehabilitation of three bridges within those areas.

The second contract, awarded in 2008 to Superior Construction/E&B Paving of Gary for $46 million, includes the reconstruction of I-65 in the area where it crosses over I-80/94, the rehabilitation of six bridges in that area and the reconstruction of the Colorado Street bridge.

The third contract, awarded in 2008 to Walsh Construction Company of Chicago for $97 million, includes widening the Borman Expressway between Broadway (S.R. 53) and Central Avenue.

After the five-year project is completed, the Borman Expressway will have four travel lanes in both directions from the Illinois state line to east of the I-65 interchange with a continuous merge lane in both directions up to Central Avenue. This fully funded Major Moves project will reduce congestion and increase safety and mobility for motorists.
