Daniel R. Wilkinson is a Spencer County native and graduated from Heritage Hills High School. After high school he attended Indiana University in Bloomington and received a Bachelor of Science degree in secondary education with an emphasis in mathematics and was a four-year member of the IU Marching Hundred and basketball pep bands. He attended law school also at Indiana University in Bloomington and received a Doctor of Jurisprudence. During law school, he served as a problem editor on the Sherman Minton Moot Court Board and served internships at the firms of Wagoner, Ayer & Hargis in Rockport and Casper & Casper in Middletown, Ohio. He passed the Indiana Bar Exam, was admitted to practice law in 1999.
From 1999 – 2002 Prosecutor Wilkinson worked as an attorney/tax analyst for the Legal Division of the Indiana Department of Revenue in Indianapolis and was promoted to supervising attorney of the inheritance tax section during his tenure. In 2002, he moved back to Spencer County and began working as a deputy prosecutor for Jon Dartt under a grant program focusing on gun violence. In 2003, he assumed the position of Chief Deputy Prosecuting Attorney and held that position through 2008. From 2009-2010, he served Spencer County as Prosecuting Attorney and was elected again, taking office in January 2015. He was a partner in the firm of Robinson, Wilkinson & Pulley in Rockport and also Executive Director of the Lincoln Amphitheatre.
He has extensive experience in the area of criminal law with over 8 years of experience as a prosecutor and the past 4 years as both a public defender and privately hired defense attorney. He has significant trial experience as a prosecutor including successfully trying death penalty/murder, drug manufacturing, and child abuse cases. As a public defender, he successfully defended a client in a self-defense case who was found not guilty by a jury on all charges.
