Healthy People 2010 Goal:

  • To increase the contraceptive use in females (age 15 to 44 years) at risk of pregnancy to 100%.
  • To decrease the contraceptive failure in females (age 15 to 44 years) experiencing pregnancy to 7%.
  • To reduce births occurring within 24 months of a previous birth (females age 15 to 44 years) to 6%.
  • To increase reproductive health prevention education in females age 18 to 24 years to 90%.

Prevalence:

  • 64.9% of the females (age 18-45 years) said that they are taking measures (tubes tied, 24.6%; vasectomy, 16%; pills, 31.4%; condoms, 13%; no partner/not sexually active, 1.6%; other methods, 11.2%; and unknown, 2.2%) to keep from getting pregnant (2002 Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System).
  • 730,210 or 52.1% of the women in Indiana age 13-44 years are in need of contraceptive services and supplies. (The U.S. percentage is 51.8%). [Contraceptive Needs and Services, 2001 and 2002, The Alan Guttmacher Institute].

Services:

  • There are a total of 101 publicly funded family planning clinics in Indiana serving a total of 147,260 female contraceptive clients of all ages and serving a total of 43,670 female contraceptive clients under the age 20 years.   • There are a total of 49 Title X-funded clinics in Indiana serving a total of 48,970 female contraceptive clients of all ages and serving a total of 15,750 female clients under the age 20 years. [Contraceptive Needs and Services, 2001 and 2002, The Alan Guttmacher Institute].
  • 58 (64%) counties indicated that they have family planning services available to women in the county and 30 (33%) indicated they were available in the next county (2004 County Capacity Survey, ISDH).
