Maternal & Child Health > Needs Assessment > HIV/AIDS in Pregnant Women and Teens Fact Sheet HIV/AIDS in Pregnant Women and Teens Fact Sheet

Healthy People 2010 Goal:

  • To reduce new AIDS (Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome) cases in aged 13 years and older to 1 per 100,000 population.
  • To reduce the HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus) infection deaths to 0.7 age-adjusted per 100,000 standard population.
  • To reduce the new cases of perinatally acquired HIV infection.

Consequences:

  • Premature Death.

Causes:

  • Behaviors (sexual practices, substance abuse, and accessing prenatal care) and biomedical status (having other STDs) are major determinants of HIV transmission.
  • Unprotected sexual contact, whether homosexual or heterosexual, with a person infected with HIV and sharing drug-injection equipment with an HIV-infected individual account for most HIV transmission.

Prevalence in Indiana:

  • By the end of December 2003 there were a total of 4,034 cumulative HIV cases reported in the State of Indiana with a prevalence rate of approximately 66 cases per 100,000 residents
  • Most of the HIV infected persons are in the middle ages of 20 to 39 years of age. Only 156 adolescent (ages 13-19) HIV cases were reported in Indiana with a prevalence rate of 25 cases per 100,000 adolescents
  • A total 810 HIV cases (20% of all HIV cases) were reported in females with a point prevalence of 26 per 100,000 females.
  • By the end of December 2003, there were a total of 7415 cumulative AIDS cases reported in the State of Indiana. 12% (n=890) of all the AIDS reported cases were of females.
  • Of the 890 female AIDS cases, 52% (n= 462) were white, 44% (n=389) were black and 4% (n=32) were Hispanic.
  • Only 50 adolescent (ages 13-19) AIDS cases were reported in Indiana with a prevalence rate of 8 cases per 100,000 adolescents.
  • By the end of December 2003, 38 mothers were HIV positive and 43 had AIDS.
  • Of the 454 children born to mothers with HIV or AIDS, 154 (34%) were white, 233 (51%) were black, 13 (3%) were Hispanic and 52 (11%) were multiracial (See table).
