Definition: Post-neonatal mortality is the number of babies who die between 29 and 365 days of life per 1,000 live births based on the birth cohort.

Healthy People 2010 Goal:

  • 1.2 deaths per 1,000 live births.

Consequences:

  • Post-neonatal mortality reflects the health of the newborn and reflects the health status and treatment of the pregnant mother and baby after birth.

Causes:

  • Post-neonatal death reflects events experienced in infancy, including SIDS, birth defects, injuries, and homicide.

**Rates are unstable.

Trends in Post-neonatal Mortality

  • Black post- neonatal infants are more than two times more likely to die than white post-neonatal infants.
  • Between 1999 and 2002, the overall, white, and black post- neonatal mortality rates slightly decreased, but were well short of meeting the Healthy People 2010 goal of 1.2 deaths per 1000 live births (See table).
