Maternal & Child Health > Needs Assessment > Unintended/Teen Pregnancies Fact Sheet Unintended/Teen Pregnancies Fact Sheet

Healthy People 2010 Goal:

  • To reduce the adolescent pregnancy rate to 43 pregnancies per 1000 population.
  • To increase condom use at first intercourse to 75% among unmarried young women age 15-17 years.
  • To decrease sexual intercourse among adolescents of less than 15 years old to 12% and among adolescents of age 15-17 years old to 25%.

Consequences:

  • Babies of teenage mothers are more likely to result in infant death and other poor pregnancy outcomes.
  • Unintended pregnancy increases the likelihood of child and maternal illness. Social consequences can be measured in unintended births, reduced educational attainment and employment opportunity, greater welfare dependency, and increased potential for child abuse.

Prevalence in Indiana:

  • In 2005, the age specific pregnancy rates for 15-17 year olds was 20.5 per 1,000 females of that age group and age specific pregnancy rates for 18-19 year olds was 78.8 per 1,000 females of that age group.
  • Top five counties with the greatest number of pregnancies to 18-19 year olds are Jennings (174.9), Starke (128.2), Scott (125), Fayette (124.5), and Pike (124.2).
  • Thirty seven percent of high school students are currently sexually active (nationally, the rate was 35%) (2007 YRBS)
  • 57% of the high school students reported having used condom during last sexual intercourse (nationally the rate was 61%) (2007 YRBS).
  • Based on the 2005 Indiana State Department of Health Free Pregnancy Test Program (outreach program to women of child bearing age to get them into the health care system), 75.6% of teens (under 20 years) did not want to become pregnant.
