History of ISDH Genomics Program

In September 2002, the ISDH Genomics Program received a four-year federal grant to implement Indiana’s state genetics plan, which includes the following:


  • Facilitation of the Indiana Genetics Advisory Committee
  • Enhancement of the Indiana Birth Defects and Problems Registry
  • Implementation of the statewide Folic Acid Campaign

Mission of the ISDH Genomics Program

  • Educate the public and health care providers about genetic disorders, services, and genomics.
  • Educate / provide information to families of children with genetic disorders or birth defects.
  • Provide resources and information for physicians, healthcare professionals, and the public.
  • Assure families equal access to services, regardless of socioeconomic status, and meet the unique healthcare needs of affected children.

The goals of the Genomics Program are accomplished with the assistance of genetics services providers throughout the state. The Maternal and Child Health Block Grant partially supports seven regional Genetics Centers. These clinics provide services to clients regardless of their socioeconomic status and ability to pay.
