Goal

The Infant Mortality Initiative / Indiana Perinatal Network/SIDS (http://www.indianaperinatal.org) is an alliance of individuals and community groups committed to promoting optimal health care for every pregnant woman and infant (to age one) by assisting in the assessment of perinatal care systems and generating recommendations and activities aimed at improving Indiana's perinatal care system. Its ultimate goal is to improve pregnancy outcomes especially infant mortality, fetal deaths, and low birthweight and decrease

Extent of Problem

  • Indiana ranked 13th worst in black infant mortality and 4th worst in white infant mortality in 1997.

  • The incidence of low birth weight infants in Indiana increased by 10 percent from 1993 to 1997.

  • According to the 1996 cohort study, maternal factors associated with increased risk of infant death among all races include being less than age 20, being unmarried, being a smoker, having less than 12 years of education, and receiving inadequate prenatal care.

Objectives

  • Reduce Indiana's infant mortality rate to 4.5/1,000 live births by 2010.

  • Increase to 90% the number of pregnant women who receive prenatal care during the first trimester by 2010.

  • Decrease the disparity between black and white infant mortality.

  • Reduce the very low birth weight rate to 0.9 % by 2010.

  • Reduce the low birth weight rate to 5 % by 2010.

  • Increase the incidence of breastfeeding to 75% by 2010.

  • Increase the percent of pregnant women who do not smoke to 2% by 2010.

  • Decrease the incidence of SIDS deaths.

  • Improve the pregnancy outcomes of women in prison through the Indiana Women's Prison Family Preservation Services.

  • Implement "Baby First...Right From the Start" multi-media campaign

  • Publish Indiana Perinatal Network Newsletter four times a year

  • Convene three State Perinatal Advisory Board meetings a year

  • Develop Indiana Perinatal Online magazine web pages for all regions

  • Implement "Back to Sleep" Campaign to decrease SIDS deaths

  • Promote local and regional perinatal coalitions to improve outcomes

  • Provide consultation to Fetal and Infant Mortality Reviews

  • Continue Perinatal Continuing Education Program and other provider education as funding permits

  • Help implement Friendly Access Initiative

  • Encourage the use of GIS maps to target high risk infant mortality/perinatal areas for effective interventions

Funding:

  • Title V Maternal and Child Health Block Grant.

  • Private funding in collaboration with Indiana Family and Social Services (FSSA); Indiana March of Dimes; Indiana Perinatal Network, Inc.; Indiana Department of Corrections; as well as many other statewide agencies.
