The Environmental Epidemiology Division is a part of the Epidemiology Resource Center and is in the Public Health and Preparedness Commission of the Indiana State Department of Health.  The program’s core purpose is to protect the public’s health, specifically through the technical support and educational outreach of materials and information on chemical releases to the environment, either accidental or intentional. It was created in 1988 and serves as the State focal point for environmental health issues related to chemical exposure.

These tasks often involve working with the Indiana Department of Environmental Management (IDEM), where various sites in the state, either closed down or currently active, are investigated for the possibility of hazardous materials being released into the environment and their potential for health concerns from human exposure.  Support to IDEM may also include attending public meetings and availability sessions to provide the public with verbal and written information on chemicals of concern.  Our efforts may also involve cooperation with the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and local health departments.

The Environmental Epidemiology Division also includes Chemical Terrorism Preparedness. Fact sheets for some common chemical terror agents as well as other Public Health Preparedness & Emergency Response information can be viewed by going to http://www.in.gov/isdh/17855.htm.   Additionally, Environmental Epidemiology compiles and posts the Indiana Fish Consumption Advisory (FCA), through collaboration with IDEM and the Department of Natural Resources (DNR).   The latest fish consumption advisory and other useful related links can be seen by going to http://www.in.gov/isdh/files/2009_FCA_Booklet.pdf

LaNetta Alexander is the Director of the Environmental Epidemiology Division.   The office is located at 2525 North Shadeland Avenue, Indianapolis, IN 46219.  Our main telephone number is 317-351-7190 and our fax number is 317/351-2679.
