MCI Career Overview

All Motor Carrier Inspectors first begin as Trainees.  Trainees are promoted to Inspectors upon completion of the Motor Carrier Inspector Training Program.

Motor Carrier Inspector Trainee

Responsibilities:

  • Prepare for the completion of the required Motor Carrier Inspector Training Program.

Duties:

  • Assist with detecting violations of State and Federal Laws and Department of Revenue Regulations governing the operations of commercial motor vehicles.
  • Assist with conducting inspections of applicable vehicles for safety, registration, proper operator papers, permits, documentations and proper safety equipment.
  • Assist in weighing trucks on permanent and/or portable scales.
  • Familiarize with arrest, warning tickets and reports relating to motor carrier enforcement.
  • Learn to set up portable scales to weigh trucks.
  • Learn to testify and prepare for prosecution information on motor carrier violations.
  • Perform under the supervision of a Motor Carrier Inspector or Working Leader to assist in detection of violators and/or weigh trucks, at random, on portable scales.
  • Assist in securing violator’s vehicle when necessary.
  • Learn arrest statutes and the technicalities associated with same.
  • Learn procedures of informing truck companies and motorists on rules and regulations.
  • Learn to assist Motor Carrier Inspector, Troopers and other law enforcement agencies with truck enforcement.
  • Submit daily and monthly reports.
  • Learn Department Policies, Rules and SOPs pertaining to MCI personnel.
  • Perform other duties as required.

Motor Carrier Inspector

Responsibilities:

  • Enforce commercial motor vehicle laws and regulations within their scope of authority.
  • Follow-up on enforcement actions when required.

Duties:

  • Check working order of scales prior to use.
  • Conduct inspections of applicable vehicles for safety registration, proper operator papers, permits, documentation and proper safety equipment.
  • Weigh trucks on permanent and/or portable scales.
  • Complete required reports on each enforcement action taken.
  • Set up portable scales in order to weigh trucks.
  • Testify in court.
  • Perform duties in conjunction with Troopers to detect commercial motor vehicle violations and/or to weigh trucks, at random, on portable scales.
  • Ensure violator vehicles are properly secured, if necessary.
  • Inform county prosecutors on motor carrier violations and technicalities for preparation of trials.
  • Assist and inform trucking companies and motorists regarding motor carrier laws.
  • Assist Troopers and other police agencies with truck enforcement problems.
  • Keep assigned equipment in condition pursuant to Standard Operating Procedures.
  • Perform school bus inspections.
  • Submit daily and monthly reports.
  • Train, assist and supervise Motor Carrier Inspector Trainees in performing the required tasks.
  • Participate in the Safety Audit Program as required.
  • Perform other duties as required.
