Indiana War Memorial

IWM > Colonel Eli Lilly Civil War Museum > Take a Virtual Tour of the Museum! > Hospitals Hospitals (Hell on Earth)

Most Hoosiers who didn't make it home died from disease - a nasty fact of life in the crowded, unsanitary conditions that soldiers and those who helped them had to suffer. Many others had the equally awful experience - "I'm hit", a less than fatal bullet. In either case, the victim was in the "hospital". In both cases, the chances of survival weren't that good.

The typical instruments of the field surgeon, as well as other basic medical supplies, convey the spartan conditions. The written words of those who were ill or wounded (or who cared for the patients) tell the awful story.
