The Indiana Bar Examination is a two day examination consisting of the Multistate Performance Test ("MPT"), the Indiana Essay Examination, and the Multistate Bar Examination ("MBE").  The bar exam is offered twice yearly, once in February and once in July.

Multistate Performance Test

The MPT is developed by the National Conference of Bar Examiners and is administered in the morning session of the first day of the bar exam.  It consists of two questions designed to examine fundamental lawyering skills such as problem solving, legal analysis and reasoning, factual analysis, communications, organization and management of a legal task, and recognizing ethical dilemmas.  Examinees are allocated a total of three hours to complete the two skills questions.  The MPT consists of 20% of the overall exam score. 

Indiana Essay Examination

The Indiana Essay Examination, consisting of six essays, is offered in the afternoon session of the first day of the bar exam.  Examinees are allocated a total of four hours to answer the six essay questions.  The potential subject matters tested are: 

  • Administrative Law
  • Business Organizations
  • Commercial Law
  • Indiana Constitutional Law
  • Family Law
  • Pleading and Practice
  • Personal Property
  • Taxation (Federal and State)
  • Wills, Trusts & Estates

The Indiana Essay Examination comprises 30% of the exam score. 

Notice Regarding Changes to Indiana Essay Examination Effective February 2018

The Indiana State Board of Law Examiners has obtained approval from the Indiana Supreme Court to change some of the topics tested on the Indiana Essay Examination. The changes are designed to better reflect the nature of today's law practice.  The changes will not be implemented until February 2018.

The topics to be tested on the Indiana Essay Examination effective February 18, 2018 are as follows:

  • Administrative law
  • Business organizations
  • Family law
  • Federal and state personal income tax, corporate tax, and estate and gift tax
  • Indiana constitutional law
  • Indiana employment law, including wage payment and wage claim statutes
  • Indiana debt collection, including garnishment, attachment, and bankruptcy exemptions
  • Residential landlord-tenant law
  • Pleading and practice, including statutes of limitation and the Indiana Tort Claims Act
  • Secured transactions
  • Wills, trusts and estates

Multistate Bar Examination

The MBE is a six hour, 200 question multiple choice exam.  It is developed by the National Conference of Bar Examiners and is offered on the morning and afternoon sessions of the second day of the exam.  A total of 100 questions are included in each session and all 200 questions are then combined for grading purposes.  The subject areas tested on the MBE are:

  • Contracts
  • Constitutional Law
  • Criminal Law
  • Evidence
  • Real Property
  • Torts
  • Civil Procedure

The MBE comprises 50% of the exam score.
