In addition to the Courts in the Classroom's extensive website of free resources for teaching about the workings and history of the court, the Indiana Supreme Court also publishes books and articles about Indiana's legal history for teachers, libraries, students, historians, and citizens. The following is a list of informational pamphlets and reading materials currently available. Be sure to check back periodically as new titles will become available.

Pamphlets are free to any interested parties. Free copies of books are available for libraries, teachers, and all other educational organizations. Send requests to sarah.kidwell@courts.IN.gov. Books can be purchased by those not affiliated with an educational organization through the Indiana Historical Bureau.

Justices of the Indiana Supreme Court This book is a 467-page multi-author volume exploring the lives of the 106 Justices of the Court. (This book can be purchased by those not affiliated with an educational organization through the Indiana Historical Society.)
Hoosier Justice at Nuremberg This book highlights the role of Indiana Supreme Court Justices Frank Richman and Curtis Shake played in post World War II Germany. Both men were called to serve as civilian judges in tribunals held at Nuremberg that tried Nazi war criminals. (This book can be purchased by those not affiliated with an educational organization through the Indiana Historical Society.)
Justice Shall Be Administered Freely This book is a collection of State of the Judiciary addresses delivered by Chief Justice Norman F. Arterburn & Chief Justice Richard M. Givan, 1973-1987.
The Indiana Constitutional Convention of 1850-1851 In his 1931 master's thesis, author and noted Indiana historian Donald F. Carmony (1910-2005) described and interpreted the events leading to the adoption of Indiana's second state constitution. The publication includes primary source materials identified by Carmony and an index and updated bibliography created by the editors.
Jesse Lynch Holman, Pioneer Hoosier This publication features a 1939 article about Judge Jesse L. Holman, an original member of the Indiana Supreme Court, written by noted history Professor I. George Blake for the Indiana Magazine of History. In addition to the text of the original article, the reprint includes photos and documents related to Holman and his judicial career, as well as a short introduction by Holman descendant Dr. Pamela Greenwood.
Isaac Blackford: Dedicated to Indiana & to Justice This publication reprints three articles about Indiana's longest serving justice, Isaac Blackford. The text is supplemented with images including newspaper clippings, political announcements, editorials, letters written by Blackford, maps, pictures, and other primary source materials.
Isaac Blackford: The Indiana Blackstone This book is a biography about one of the leading figures in Indiana's early judiciary. Blackford served on the Indiana Supreme Court from 1816-1853.
In Memoriam: Glimpses from Indiana's Legal Past This volume memorializes the deeds and accomplishments of men who sat on the Indiana Supreme Court and other important Hoosiers including President Abraham Lincoln and Vice President Thomas Hendricks.
"Slavery Cases in the Indiana Supreme Court: Where Slaves & Former Slaves Found Hope" This article examines several cases presented to the Court between 1816 and 1863 and how, through them, the Court worked to uphold the constitution's prohibition on slavery in the face of considerable public opposition.
"Indiana's Supreme Court In the Civil War: How Can the Constitution Be Unconstitutional?" This article highlights the role of Indiana's judiciary during the Civil War including the status of public offices whose incumbents left for the army, suspension of habeas corpus, and protection of individual freedom of speech during the war.
"Indiana's Constitution in a Nation of Constitutions" This article sets out to provide information about the writing of Indiana's 1816 Constitution.
The 1816 Constitution of the State of Indiana This pamphlet is a reprint of the 1816 Constitution of the State of Indiana.
Justice Shall Be Administered Freely This book is a collection of State of the Judiciary addresses delivered by Chief Justice Randall T. Shepard, 1988-2004.
Hoosier Justice: A History of the Supreme Court of Indiana Written by former Indiana Supreme Court law clerk Jerome Withered, this book is the only comprehensive history of the Court published to date. It covers the court's history from 1787 - 1977. (No free copies available. Contact the Indiana Historical Bureau for information on how to purchase.)
